SEVERAL representatives of Slovakia sent their congratulations to Ukraine for successful management of the October 26 parliamentary elections.
During a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko, President Andrej Kiska commended the calm course of the free and well managed democratic elections.
“The Slovak president also congratulated his Ukrainian partner for the election victory of pro-reform and pro-European forces which creates good conditions for developing necessary reforms in Ukraine,” Kiska’s spokesperson Roman Krpelan said, as quoted by the SITA newswire, adding that Ukraine can rely on Slovakia’s support during their implementation.
The Slovak president also invited Poroshenko to a meeting with the Visegrad Group (V4) presidents that will take place in November in Bratislava.
Poroshenko said he is aware of the importance of the V4 format (which includes Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland). He added he will travel to Slovakia if his working programme allows it, as reported by SITA.
The Ukrainian president also thanked Slovakia for support and said that the elections were a good example of sharing European values by Ukrainian citizens. He also thanked Slovakia for being the first country in the V4 region to ratify the Association Agreement, as well as sending humanitarian aid and providing medical treatment to injured members of protests held in Kiev earlier this year, SITA wrote.
Slovakia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry issued a statement in which it congratulated Ukraine for fulfilling their basic right to vote in a calm and peaceful way, though the country still faces many problems and challenges.
“In this respect, even before the final counting of votes, we state with pleasure that the majority of submitted ballots supported the political parties whose aim is the future of Ukraine closely connected to the European Union,” the ministry said, as quoted by SITA, adding that it hopes the new government will be formed soon in order to start its work without any delays.
Slovakia, as a member of the EU and country with its own experience with transformation to democracy, is ready to help Ukraine in its efforts and “in the spirit of good neighbourhood relations between our allied nations”, as reported by SITA.
Also František Šebej of Most-Híd who chairs the parliamentary foreign affairs committee welcomed the election results, saying it is good news for democracy, SITA wrote.
The preliminary results show that the elections in Ukraine were won by pro-European parties. The most votes were received by the Block of Petro Proshenko, the party of the current Ukrainian president, followed by the Front of acting PM Arseniy Yatseniuk.
